We know it is an exciting idea, to rent a salon room and be in business for yourself, but don’t let the initial excitement cloud your judgment. That’s what this article is about, not clouding your judgment, and by not doing so learning how to succeed as an independent beauty operator. Read on and then, if you have questions, contact us and we will do our best to answer them. We are Salon & Spa Galleria, and we are in the salon booth rental business in the Fort Worth, Texas, area.
The first step is to set an operating budget
Get the ugly financials out of the way. You must have a firm grasp of your operating budget or you should not move forward with this at all. You may be completely fed up, working for commissions in a beauty salon owned by someone else, but being fed up is better than being broke.
How much money will it take for you to live on? What are all of your bills, personal and professionally? Once you know that, you will know how many customers you will need weekly, and you will know what you need to charge those customers. It all starts with the expenses and how much you need to make.
Second step: find the best package deal you can for a salon suite
In most cases, it isn’t the booth rental fee which hurts a new business; it is the cost of the incidentals which will sink a new ship. Do you know what professional equipment costs, the cost of a cutting chair, the cost of a rinsing station, the cost of mirrors and dryers and on and on and on? Those costs can drain your savings in a New York minute. And what about the marketing side of it, the website, the ads, and the radio spots. And what about the HDTV and WiFi and laundry services? And do not forget about utilities? A utility bill of $300 a month might be crippling to a new business. Can you afford it?
The good news is that many companies will include some, or all, of these incidental fees in their rental package. Using Salon and Spa Galleria as an example, our rental package includes all of the aforementioned incidentals. We pay for your utilities, we provide professional equipment, and WiFi, and marketing and HDTV. All you provide with Salon & Spa Galleria is your talent, your supplies, and the product you plan on selling in your salon suite.
Do you have what it takes?
This is the final consideration. Working for yourself requires a solid work ethic and strong determination. Do you have those two attributes?
