What are your options for barber shop space?
Here are the options to consider:
- Work from home
- Work from an established beauty salon/barber shop for commissions
- Rent your own retail space for your sole proprietorship
- Rent a salon booth rental in an established location like Salon & Spa Galleria
Let’s look at each of these, the pros and cons, in condensed form.
Work from home
By far the least-expensive option on the table for discussion. Your overhead is negligible with this option. You are already paying for utilities and WiFi. All you need is a business license and your own barber tools, and you are essentially open for business.
The downside to this option? Your location is the biggest downside. Walk-in traffic will not exist. You most likely do not live on a high-traffic road. Any business you have will be by word-of-mouth and your own marketing efforts. Consider, also, the distractions which are inherent with this option, and the fact that you do not generate a professional appearance working from home. Still, this option is appealing to many.
Work from an established beauty salon for commissions
This is the most common option for most barbers/hair stylists. With this option, you are given space from which to do your work. For that space, you work for commissions, usually in the 40% range. You are essentially an employee of the beauty salon you work in. The upside: there is no pressure, no overhead to be concerned about, and a steady income. For those starting out in this business, this is usually the most attractive option.
Rent your own retail space
In one word, the biggest drawback to this option is cost. Renting retail space for a stand-alone barber shop is costly. First and last month’s rent, plus damage deposit, plus utilities and equipment/furniture can set you back close to $10,000 before you even open your doors for business. The good news: it’s your business and any profits made are yours, 100%.
Rent a salon booth
This is where we come in at Salon & Spa Galleria. With this business model, you lease a salon suites for rent from us, in a building which houses other professionals such as yourself i.e. massage therapist, nail specialists, estheticians, etc. We pay for your overhead, included in your rental fee (as low as $50 per week at select locations). You keep 100% of your profits. We also give you training in business and marketing, and your own Web page, and furniture should you need it.
The risk? You have to generate your own business and customers, but you are in a high-traffic location and we teach you how to generate more business.
