The short version of this article about what to look for in a booth rental contract is this: look for the best terms possible for you!
To expand upon this a bit more, let’s look at a typical booth rental contract so you know what to expect. If you have any questions after reading this, give us a call.
Length of contract
Most salon booth rentals are month-by-month. You will find some which require you to rent by the year, and some by six-month increments, but by and large most are month-to-month. This is a huge benefit for those renting a salon suite. You are not signing up and committing to a huge chunk of time. Your liability is limited in a monthly lease, which is always a good thing.
Rental cost
The range for a salon suite rental is between $50 and $400 per week. This wide fluctuation has to do with location and the size of the suite. Obviously a salon booth in Manhattan will cost more than a salon booth in Topeka, Kansas. On a more local basis, a salon rental in a seedy part of a city will cost less than one in an upscale part of that same city. Our suggestion: shop around and find the rental cost which best fits within your operating budget.
Amenities
This is almost as important as the rental cost. What is included in the rental fee? Using our own Salon & Spa Galleria as an example, we include just about everything but the kitchen sink in our contracts. We pay for the utilities. We provide professional equipment and laundry services. We provide an HDTV and WiFi, and we provide a concierge and a marketing package. All you provide are your supplies, your business cards, and whatever product you plan on selling within your salon booth.
What we have described can carry a pretty hefty price tag, so shop around.
Ownership
Who owns the booth rental company? We believe it is very important that it be a locally owned and operated rental company. That way your problems are immediately addressed by people with a stake in the health of your community.
Insurance
Make sure you know what insurance is applicable with the rental company, and which insurance matters you are responsible for. Go into this situation with your eyes wide open and thus you eliminate surprises down the road.
Once you have done your due diligence, pick the best situation for you and begin your new life as an independent business owner. We are quite certain you will find it to be infinitely more satisfying than working for commissions in a beauty salon owned by someone else.
Cheers and best wishes!
