The history of the hair salon booth.
Starting around 1900 in the United States, the modern hair salon had its beginnings, and it consisted of a large, common area where five or six “workstations,” or hair salon chairs, where located. Each salon chair was “manned” by a hair stylist. In most cases, that stylist was not an employee of the hair salon but rather an independent contractor, renting that salon chair and being paid a commission for the business she generated from that chair rental.
That business model became the norm, and remained the norm, until about fifteen years ago, at which time a new business model hit the hair industry. This new business model called for talented beauticians/hair stylists to rent a salon chair, a salon booth, or a salon suite, and we will talk more about that in the next section.
Today’s hair salon rental options.
The biggest difference with this new business model is in the pay. Instead of being paid a commission while working in a hair salon owned by someone else, it was now possible for a talented hair professional to operate their own business from a rented location i.e. hair booth, hair salon suite. In this scenario, a rent payment is required, but after that, 100% of the profits belong to the small business owner who is renting the salon suite.
Please note this is not a franchise situation, but rather an affordable opportunity for a person with limited funds to actually own a business.
Offering the opportunity to grow into success.
A salon booth rental, or salon suite rental, is very inexpensive when compared to the rental of a retail location i.e. retail storefront. Instead of paying thousands in rent you are scaled down and paying hundreds for a smaller space. Instead of having multiple workstations there is only one. And instead of having multiple stylists working from one space, you have you, the owner, working from one space.
The beauty of this plan is obvious. The risks are low. The investment capital need to open a business is very low. A person has a safe environment from which to grow, learn how to operate a business, and safely expand. And the proof is in the pudding, so to speak, because salon suite leasing is rapidly gaining in popularity around the country.
