Now, on to our advice about opening a hair salon.
Opening a hair salon is a huge commitment.
Oh my goodness, you would not believe the number of people we have dealt with who did not understand the level of commitment necessary to be successful in business. It sounds wonderful, right? You open your doors for business, for your own business, you greet hordes of customers with a smile, word spreads about your outstanding hair salon, and quicker than the shake of a lamb’s tail, you are rolling in dough.
Not!
Owning any business takes time. A great amount of time. Time away from loved ones. Time away from your other interests. Time away from exercise and relaxation and trips and . . . well, it takes time. It takes time at work, dealing with customers, and it takes time once you go home, dealing with taxes and marketing plans and a thousand different ideas which are competing in your brain for your time. This is not some 9-5 job you can leave when your shift is done; owning a business means, especially in the early years, that your shift is never done.
Yes, opening a hair salon is a risk.
When you work for someone else in their hair salon, or beauty salon, or nail salon, you receive a weekly, or monthly, paycheck. It is a dependable gig, it is a safe gig, and it is a gig which carries practically no pressure or risk. As long as you do a great job with your skills, you will forever find salons which will want you to work for them.
Owning your own salon? There is no safety net. There is no “leave it behind” when your shift is done. There is no floating through life without a care, because your salon is your lifeline and your lifeblood. If you fail, and make no mistake, people do fail, there will be financial consequences.
Now that we have issued our warning, let’s look at our business advice, advice which is sound and has stood the test of time.
The Salon & Spa Galleria word of advice.
Our one piece of advice, which we believe to be more important than any other advice you will receive, is to start small, take a deep breath, and grow slowly into success. If you have the skills, and if you take advantage of the Salon & Spa Galleria marketing program, you will be successful, and as that success grows, you can then begin thinking about expansion. However, until that moment happens, take it slow and learn how to be an owner, learn the ropes, learn the finer points of owning a business. Lay a solid foundation now and reap the benefits later.
